Genesis 2:4-25

In Genesis 2:4-25, we see God’s original design for man and woman. God created man and woman equal, different, and for his glory. First, God made us in his image, which means both “representation” and “rule.” Adam and Eve were originally created to reflect God’s character to the world and to function like a king and queen under God and over everything else. Each as God’s images, Adam and Eve both equally possessed inestimable dignity, worth, and purpose.

Second, although God created us ontologically equal, he created us functionally different. God created Adam and Eve; he didn’t create Adam and Steve! We saw that Adam was entrusted to be a servant leader of his family, and that Eve was entrusted as Adam’s helper, to strengthen and empower his leadership according to her giftings. She was also empowered by God to do what no man is able to do; which is to create and grow human life. Through Adam and Eve’s union, they would obey God’s command to be fruitful and multiply, spreading God’s image across the earth.

And finally we saw that God’s design for Marriage is not ultimately about us; it’s about God’s glory in the spiritual union between Christ and the Church.
