The Depth of the Digital Waters

During Bible at the Beach, one of the family favorites is the beach itself. Not so much the sand and the sun, but the water. The water is clear, and it just seems to bring a smile to your face. The kids are happy when they are swimming -- whether at the beach or the pool. And while swimming is fun, it can also be dangerous.

The water is dangerous in several ways, and one of them is depth. Scuba divers know this very well. The deeper a scuba diver goes, the greater the effects of the water pressure has on the body. The pressure causes nitrogen to have a narcotic effect on a person, hence the name "nitrogen narcosis." So, the avoid this, divers have gauges that tell them how deep they underwater, and this helps the divers to avoid the effects of nitrogen narcosis.

The same principle is true with digital media. Without some type of data about our digital habits, we may not realize the depths of the digital waters we are swimming in: the phone, the computer, the smartTV, the smart watch, the tablet, the videos games -- and we can develop "digital narcosis." We become affected by our digital devices.

Sometimes, we simply don't know how immersed we are in digital media and the concurrent effects it has on our minds. This session is an attempt to look at some objective data given to us by our phones: screen time. This helps us to understand how deep we are swimming in the digital waters and what effects that has on our minds.
